Promotions Producer, Journalist and News Producer

WIAT, Nexstar’s CBS affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama, has openings for a promotions producer, reporter and news producer.
Birmingham includes art museums, theatres, concert halls and many festivals and events. With a variety of cuisines ranging from world famous bar-b-que, to Korean, to Cuban, to multiple James Beard Award semi-finalists, the city’s restaurant scene is just one way to discover the diversity of the region. For families, the zoo and the science center are great attractions. College football fans look forward each year to hooking up and watching SEC games in Alabama and Auburn, as well as the annual Magic City Classic when Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University face off. Birmingham’s beautiful city center Regions Field is home to the Birmingham Barons double-A affiliated White Sox baseball team.
The Promotions Producer will be a highly motivated and creative individual.
This position will be responsible for the effective production of on-air promotional spots, digital marketing and special projects.
- Work closely with the Director of Creative Services to design, write, produce and edit compelling on-air image promotions and campaigns, independently or as part of a team
- Work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and ensure assigned projects are delivered on time
- Push the creative envelope to new heights while adhering to brand guidelines
- Produce customer-sponsored promotional content as assigned
- Perform other related duties, as assigned
Requirements & Skills:
- Minimum of 3 years of on-air promotion experience as a writer/producer/editor for a local station or cable network working in a news environment
- Must have the ability to work regular daytime hours and flexible hours, including late nights and weekends if required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be able to provide a reel of work samples – include a web address with your CV or cover letter
- Strong non-linear editing skills
- In-depth knowledge and proven experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Premiere Pro and After Effects.
- Passion for strong image and promotional writing
- Experience with Ross XPression and strong background in graphic design for news and promotion
- Must possess the skills necessary to execute a project from concept to completion
- Possess strong video production skills using Sony and Canon cameras
- Working knowledge of lighting and audio equipment
- Possess excellent communication, presentation, organization and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully interact with all departments

- Arrange interviews with people who can provide information about stories
- Research and analysis of contextual information related to news to be able to provide complete and accurate information
- Gathers information about events through research, interviews, experiences, or participation in political, news, sports, arts, social, or other functions
- Provides news managers and news producers with stories relevant to the local community
- Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas
- Revises work to meet editorial approval or to meet time requirements
- Produces, edits and presents reports for all platforms
- Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality
- Writes articles for the web and other eMedia platforms
- Interacts with viewers/users on social media sites
- Executes special projects and other assigned tasks
Requirements & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
- fluent English
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to respond at will if needed
- Minimum of two years of experience in news reporting (Depending on market size)
- Superior on-air presence
- Proficiency with computers, telephones, photocopiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Flexibility to work any shift

The News Producer produces daily newscasts, decides the order in which stories will be told, writes teasers and other content, times news programs, edits videos, and posts videos to the site website.
- Produces newsletters for broadcast on all platforms
- Write and commission reports
- Approve scripts
- Balances news and feature content to create engaging shows
- Edit the video
- Writes articles for the website and other eMedia platforms
- Interacts with viewers and users on social media sites
- Performs other assigned duties
Requirements & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
- fluent English
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Minimum of two years of experience in press operations (depending on market size)
- Proficiency with computers, telephones, photocopiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipment
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Flexibility to work any shift
